Dream a Little Dream

Episode #800
June 1, 2024

When I was in school or working at a job, my dreams would not resolve themselves.
A dream’s loose end would loop back to my job or my classes ending in another loose end.

After I had already graduated from college I had a recurring dream where I forgot where my university classes were. I was late to classes or never made it at all. One by one I failed my classes until I did not have enough credits to advance. I was doomed to return to the same grade night after night.

In another dream, while I was working as an Apple consultant, I failed to help resolve my client’s computer problem. I followed the troubleshooting flow chart until a life sized graphic arrow pointed me back to the beginning of the chart. This looped and looped like a demon software program. Sometimes the flow chart was an Escher-like Chutes and Ladders game board where I slid down the connecting lines and was forced to climb a stairway back to the beginning of the chart.

Now that I am retired and not in school I have lucid dreams. When a dream takes a turn into a looping conundrum I make a conscious decision to alter my path or simply wake up. I am free to pursue whatever plot the dream presents or bend the plot to my liking. Those frustrating dream complications and dilemmas are no longer important to me.

Because my dreams no longer struggle to resolve imagined problems I am free to create overnight adventures of my own. Sometimes I figure out how a woodworking project will go. I wake with a clear procedure which flows effortlessly from my dream onto my shop drawings.

Other times I revisit my childhood flying dreams. These tend to be in freefall since it is the environment where I feel the most free.

In another favorite dream I am on a road trip with Paula. We have no itinerary, just one landscape, entertainment or adventure after the other.

I have a notebook on my bed’s headboard. It is a wonderful place to find the topics and plots of story ideas. Because dreams are fabrications of real memories the fiction I write in my notebook is based in true life. There is real truth in everything I write.

The more I practice awareness in my dreams, the more present that I am. I am no longer a passenger in the vehicle of my dream. I am the driver.

Earth, Fire, Water and Air are the elements of life, but also of our dreams.

Dreams of home, industry and nourishment are those of the Earth.

Fire is the energy of our dream-life imagination. It is the heat in our belly and the purification of life outside of dreams.

Water is the tidal ebb and flow of emotions, intuition and feelings. It is the moon’s arch of our dreams.

In my dreams, Air is freedom. It is 360 degrees of awareness. It is flight.

“There is a fifth dimension beyond that which is known to man. It is a dimension as vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light and shadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears and the summit of his knowledge. This is the dimension of imagination. It is an area which we call,” dreamland!
