Reflection

Episode #814

September 7, 2024

As I reflect on the things in my life I realize that everything is a mirror image of itself.

Don’t you love the gossamery image when the forest’s line of reflection is the shore of the pond?

A cue ball rebounds perfectly from an elastic cushion, no english, no spin. Every incidence is equal to its consequence.

Reflection on history can, but often does not, guide one to an improved future.

“Your best teacher is your last mistake.” — Ralph Nader

Mistakes are an opportunity to reflect on what went wrong and to apply that lesson to a more perfect future.

Everything we see is an exact reflection of the light which illuminates it. Think of the odds that those images enter the eye at the perfect angle.

Mental reflection is memory. Ironic that the older we get the deeper the meaning from those fading memories.

Empathy is the soul of another reflected back upon oneself.

Not surprisingly people think of mirrors when they reflect on reflection. A 12 year old looks back at me from my mirror. Sometimes my father looks back. I am not that old yet, I think.

The essence of every plan is the product of reflection on all of its steps, ramifications and history. One step must lead exactly to the next.

“For every action (force) in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction.”
— Newton’s Third Law of Motion

Science is the practice of reflecting on the world around you:

  1. Observe a thing in your environment.
  2. Question why the thing is as observed.
  3. Hypothesize why a thing is as it is.
  4. Experiment and collect data of the behavior observed.
  5. Analyze the data and the experimental results.
  6. Draw a conclusion from the analysis.
  7. Communicate your conclusion to your peers.
  8. Receive replication and verification from your peers.

Reflect on the process and conclusions of the scientific endeavor.

In computer graphics ray tracing renders realism to objects with true lighting, reflection, refraction and shadows. As in life’s reflection, ray tracing requires large quantities of observation, analysis and execution.

A congenitally blind person does not see visual images in their dreams. Yet, the sub-conscience constructs rich sensory and emotional content from its reflection on other sensory experiences.

Reflection is always dependent of the surface from which it is reflected. The more polished, the more pure the reflection, the more perfect the reception.
