Bingo

Episode #833

January 18, 2025

I was one of six winners at community Bingo.

As I stacked the six Bingo cards in front of me and tested my dauber I introduced myself to Chris, who was sitting across from me.

“Hi, I’m Ricki.”
“I am Chris. I came to win.”
“I came to lose,” I said. “But I have dead reckoning and dumb luck on my side.”

The game of Bingo is mindless, boring and ultimately an excuse to socialize. I did have to pay attention to the letter-number callouts which were dulled by the din of conversation in the echoing room.

“Was that a “B” or a “G”?
“Fifteen or Fifty?”
“You only need one more. I still need five.”

One game followed the other. Always it was someone else calling out “BINGO!”

The breaks were the best part where I asked Chris, “What is that haystack looking candy snack? What does it taste like?”
“I think it is made of pretzel sticks. The color and taste remind me of something from my youth.”
“Where did you grow up?”
“Boston, but I moved here ten years ago.”
“Where do you live?”
“I am up near the mountain trailhead.”
“My house is on the ridge west of the runway.”
“You could walk to my house along the firebreak.”

And so it went, listening and daubing and chatting during the breaks.

In the fifth game my luck changed. I daubed a square every other callout. Soon my card was filled except for one square. B-1 was called, but I needed B-11.

“I just need one more B-1 and I can daub my B-1-1,” I said.
Chris laughed.

Then the barker called out B-11.

“BINGO!” I yelled.

Dead reckoning, dumb luck and new friends made for a fun night at the community center.
