Multitouch was made popular on
Apple’s iPhone.
Instead of interacting via a keyboard
or numeric pad, we communicate
with touch.
A multitouch surface accepts
various types of input.
Tap to click.
Pinch to zoom.
Two finger rotation to rotate.
Hold and swipe to scroll.
Swipe to change screens
and reveal functions.
Swipe also allows for replies to notifications,
closing of apps, returning to a previous screen and so much more.
Beginning with iPhone 6S Apple has included 3D touch.
3D touch adds a whole new layer to the iPhone surface.
3D touch knows when you are pressing harder.
Capacitive sensors detect the amount of pressure you impart on the glass.
Flexible Gorilla Glass bends sightly toward the capacitive sensor layer
bringing your finger closer to the capacitor plates the harder you press.
Combine this pressure sensitivity with the digitizer screen and the result
is a second layer of touch.
There are two stages of 3D touch:
A light press produces a preview called Peek.
A deeper press is a Pop which commits to a screen or feature.
Peek a photo to preview.
Pop to interact with the photo. This is called committing to the action.
Peek and Pop each have its own unique haptic feedback.
Haptic feedback is a small vibrating bump under your finger.
Blur also helps to see the transitions from Peek to Pop.
Press and hold an app icon for Home screen quick actions.
They let you jump into key activities.
Phone app quick actions include your Favorites list.
From the Phone quick action menu you can:
View Most Recent Voicemail
Create New Contact
Search For Contact
View Most Recent Call.
Settings app quick actions include
common settings such as Bluetooth,
Wi-Fi, Celular Data and Battery.
Peek at the Camera app quick action menu,
then slide your finger to Take Photo,
Record Slo-mo, Record Video or Take Selfie.
Maps quick actions show upcoming destinations such as directions home,
Mark My Location, Send My Location and Search Nearby.
Try all your apps and see what Home screen quick actions that each reveal.
Peek an email in the Inbox list to preview, Pop to read it.
If you are reading an email and encounter a web link,
Peek to preview the web page, then Pop to open it in Safari.
If you let go after Peek and before Pop you are returned to the email.
Peek at an email , then slide your finger up to Reply, Forward, Mark,
Notify Me or Move Message.
In Photos, Peek and swipe up to Copy, Share, Favorite,
Show Photos from this Day or Delete.
View live photos with a Peek or hard press Pop the photo to enter full screen.
In the Home screen, press and hold the left side of the screen (Peek),
then swipe right or Pop to enter the switcher multitasking screen.
My favorite 3D action is the keyboard mouse action.
Hard press the keyboard to drag and position an insertion point cursor
into your text.
Another hard press selects a word of text.
Double press to select a sentence and triple press to select a paragraph.
Touching the selected text gives you the Cut, Copy, Paste, etc. pop up
menu you would expect.
Dragging the cursor past the text will scroll the text screen.
Your iPhone is now 3 dimensional.
That’s really deep, man.
