Episode #856

Science is a process and a method.
“Science is not the truth. Science is finding the truth. When science
changes its opinion, it didn’t lie to you.
It learned more.”
— Brené Brown
It is easy to question science when it seems to contradict itself. The truth is not absolute; it is revealed reiteratively.
The basic steps of the Scientific Method are:
Observation
Question
Hypothesis
Experiment
Analysis
Conclusion
Communicate Results
Invite review (loops back to Observation)
We are all pretty good at Observation. Scrutiny, Focus, Comprehension and Comparison are key to seeing. Seeing is not just the use of the eyes. It involves all the senses and the brain. Memory plays an important role in Observation. Memory is a product of learning.
Questioning is the beginning of critical thinking. Blind belief is comforting, but Faith does not move us toward Hypothesis. Hypothesis is the real start of Discovery. It is the first step in finding or creating something new.
A Hypothesis cannot be proven without Experimentation. Does your idea stand up to testing and measurement? How does it compare to other known realities?
The Conclusions learned from Experimentation are born of Analysis. When an idea is broken down to its simplest elements, the patterns, relationships, and meanings begin to emerge.
Understanding gives one permission to draw Conclusions based on revelations. In literature, analyzing a poem reveals its theme and meaning. In business, analyzing sales data identifies trends or problems. In science, experimental results conclude the correctness of the hypothesis.
A key responsibility of scientists is Communicating Results. Experimental Results are key Observations for other scientists. They continue the reiterative process of discovery.
Inviting review is most important. Peer and self-review parse out the inevitable errors. It also reveals the evolution of reality. What may be proven today may change tomorrow.
The only truth is what you can Observe, Question, Hypothesize, Experiment, Analyze, Conclude and Communicate.
