Rhythm of Existence

Episode #858

Some quantum strings vibrate in 4:4 time.

I spoke of the vibrations of quantum strings with my friend. She is a physicist and a musician.

I quoted Siddhartha:
“The river is everywhere at the same time, at the source and at the mouth, at the waterfall, at the ferry, at the current, in the ocean and in the mountains, everywhere, and that the present only exists for it, not the shadow of the past, nor the shadow of the future.”

Here is a summary of our conversation:

What if the reason we love rock and roll—the reason our feet tap and our hearts race at the sound of a driving beat—is because we’re made of music? Not metaphorically. Physically.

According to string theory, the universe isn’t built from solid particles but from tiny, vibrating strings of energy. Like the river, they exist everywhere all the time. Everything—electrons, photons, even you and me—is just a different note in the great cosmic chord. These strings don’t hum in isolation; they resonate in complex, elegant patterns. And some physicists speculate that certain fundamental vibrations may follow rhythms that, when scaled up, feel like music.

One such rhythm is 4/4 time—four beats per measure, the foundation of most Western music and the heartbeat of rock and roll. It mirrors the rhythms we carry in our bodies: the thump of our heart, the cadence of our steps, the breath we ride like tide. We don’t just enjoy this rhythm—we are this rhythm.

It’s as if the universe strums a pattern we’ve always known. When we listen to rock and roll, we’re not just entertained—we’re recognizing ourselves in motion. That snare drum on the second and fourth beat? That guitar riff tumbling through a 12-bar blues? That’s not just sound. It’s echo. A reminder. A resonance with the deeper vibrations that compose us.

Maybe this is why we say music “moves” us. Because it does—down to the quantum strings that shape our bones, our blood, our being.

So the next time your head nods to a rhythm, or your fingers drum along the steering wheel, consider:
You’re not just following the beat.
You’re meeting the universe in time.

And maybe the universe dances, too.
